Double Fine Productions has recently reclaimed the rights to its entire catalog, marking a significant return to independence following Microsoft’s strategic reshuffle, which saw several studios part ways during its “Xbox reset.” In a heartfelt tribute to the late Tim Curry, the studio is offering fans the chance to download and own the iconic game Brutal Legend for free, but only for a limited time of 666 minutes. This offer will be available until 3:06 AM PT / 6:06 AM ET on Thursday, August 27.
Honoring a Legend
Tim Curry, who passed away today at the age of 80, lent his voice to the character Doviculus in Brutal Legend, a heavy metal strategy game released in 2009 by Double Fine’s founder, Tim Schafer. In a touching message on their itch.io page, the company expressed their condolences, stating, “Rest in peace, dark prince.”
IGN’s Daemon Hatfield praised Brutal Legend with a score of 9 out of 10, describing it as a “tour de force” that seamlessly blends humor, music, and innovative gameplay into a polished experience. He noted, “You haven’t played a game quite like this before and won’t want to miss it.”
While Curry is perhaps best remembered for his iconic role in the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, his contributions to the gaming world are also noteworthy. He appeared in several titles beyond Brutal Legend, including Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, and Dragon Age: Origins.
In light of its regained independence, Double Fine has announced plans to revive its Amnesia Fortnight game jam, signaling an exciting new chapter as the studio prepares to embark on its next project(s).
