Changes to Minecoin Usage on Nintendo Platforms
As the highly anticipated launch of Minecraft on the Switch 2 approaches this October, Mojang has unveiled significant updates regarding the use of Minecoins on Nintendo platforms. Starting on 27th October 2026, the virtual currency known as Minecoins will be subject to new restrictions that players should be aware of.
From the launch date, any Minecoins purchased specifically on Nintendo systems, including both the original Switch and the upcoming Switch 2, will be confined to use on those devices. This means that Minecoins acquired on other platforms will no longer be applicable for purchases within the Minecraft Marketplace on Nintendo devices.
For players who own Minecoins prior to this date, there is some reassurance. These coins will be transferred to a Legacy Wallet, allowing continued use across different platforms. Importantly, there is no expiration date on these Legacy Minecoins; however, Mojang has indicated that they will be utilized first during transactions.
Additionally, Mojang has cautioned players about the potential limitations of retail Minecoin cards. It is recommended to check the packaging for compatibility with the intended platform before making a purchase. This advisory extends to all Minecoin cards, ensuring players are well-informed about their options.
As the Minecraft community gears up for the Switch 2 release, Mojang has also confirmed a digital upgrade path for current Switch players, ensuring a seamless transition to the new platform. Further updates regarding Minecoin changes or additional features for the Switch 2 version will be communicated as they become available.
