RPCS3 Developers Clarify Position on DLSS 5
The RPCS3 development team has taken a firm stance regarding the recently leaked DLSS 5 technology, which has garnered attention from fans experimenting with its capabilities on the PS3 emulator. In a recent communication via X, the team acknowledged that some users have been testing a leaked DLSS 5 DLL within the emulator’s renderer. However, they expressed a clear disinterest in incorporating this technology, stating that they have observed its output and prefer to distance themselves from it.
In their statement, the RPCS3 team articulated their philosophy succinctly:
“Whilst the gaming industry pushes more upscalers and frame generation to hallucinate games and hide their lack of optimization, we do not ship any of that slop.”
This declaration has sparked discussions among the community, particularly given that RPCS3 had previously integrated AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) into their platform. Critics have pointed out this apparent contradiction, suggesting that the team’s aversion to DLSS may not be about upscaling per se, but rather a specific objection to generative neural rendering technologies.
The developers’ concerns about DLSS 5 potentially masking optimization deficiencies raise intriguing questions about the future of game preservation and enhancement. The leaked DLL, initially extracted from an early build of NBA 2K27, has already been implemented in various PC titles, yielding mixed results. Despite these developments, the RPCS3 team remains steadfast in their commitment to preservation, asserting that the integration of DLSS 5 does not align with their core mission.
As the conversation around emulation and graphical enhancement continues to evolve, the RPCS3 team’s position highlights a broader debate within the gaming community about the balance between technological advancement and the integrity of classic gaming experiences.
