The Google Gemini app is undergoing a notable transformation, with design updates that aim to enhance user experience. Recent observations indicate that the app is testing a revamped camera interface and a refreshed ‘@’ menu, both of which promise to streamline interactions and improve functionality.
Camera Interface Overhaul
In the latest version 17.55.8 of the Google app, a new camera interface has been activated, drawing inspiration from the ChatGPT mobile app. Currently, users access the camera through the ‘+’ attachment menu, which opens a full-screen viewfinder. However, the upcoming update will modify this layout, allowing the viewfinder to occupy only half of the screen while keeping the chat contents visible. This design change aims to create a more integrated experience, enabling users to interact with their conversations while capturing images.
While this visual overhaul appears user-centric, the resemblance to the ChatGPT camera interface is hard to overlook. Google’s new implementation features a floating viewfinder, contrasting with ChatGPT’s larger, bottom-touching design. The Gemini interface will also include a handle for expanding to full screen or minimizing the viewfinder, along with a back button and a slightly redesigned camera shutter key. However, a shift in the camera switcher’s location to the three-dot menu may complicate quick access to switching between front and back cameras.
A Revamped @ Menu
In addition to the camera interface, changes are also on the horizon for the ‘@’ menu, which appears when users type the symbol in chat. Currently, this menu displays a row of Connected Apps, including those that are disabled. The anticipated update could streamline this section by hiding disabled apps, thus decluttering the interface.
The redesigned ‘@’ menu may be titled “Connectors,” featuring rounded edges and a wider layout. This change aims to enhance usability by focusing on active connections. At the bottom of the menu, users will find an option to “Connect apps,” directing them to the Connected Apps page. Additionally, the Avatars section will showcase existing avatars, with an option to add a new one, although this may seem redundant for users who already have an avatar set up.
As with many early feature discoveries, the activation of these updates does not guarantee their eventual rollout to the public. However, the tech community remains vigilant for further developments regarding these design enhancements, which could significantly impact user engagement with the Google Gemini app.
