AMD and Perplexity have announced the launch of Portable Computer, a software solution now available for supported Windows PCs equipped with Ryzen AI Max Series processors. This innovative software also extends its support to the Ryzen AI Halo developer platform, enhancing the capabilities for developers and users alike.
Empowering Local AI Tasks
This strategic collaboration allows Perplexity subscribers to execute local AI tasks and manage recurring workflows directly on their hardware through the Perplexity Windows app. Access is granted to both Pro and Max subscribers, whether on individual or enterprise plans.
Supported systems are now capable of running extensive AI models directly on the device, eliminating the need to transmit every task to the cloud. This advancement not only enables users to analyze sensitive files locally but also helps them conserve Perplexity Computer credits typically used for local inference, as noted by AMD.
Perplexity has ingeniously integrated local models with agent orchestration, scheduling, and security controls. This cohesive setup alleviates the burden on users to assemble disparate AI tools and infrastructure, while still providing access to cloud-based reasoning and web research when necessary.
The offering seamlessly connects with popular workplace software, including Gmail, Outlook, Slack, and GitHub. It features folder-level permissions, sandboxing, and IT controls designed to assist businesses in managing the use of local AI within their existing workflows.
AMD’s AI PC Evolution
Over the past two years, AMD has been steadily expanding its focus on AI PCs. The chipmaker introduced its inaugural AI PCs in 2023, featuring a dedicated neural processing unit within an x86 processor. This initiative has evolved into what AMD describes as agentic PCs, capable of running AI agents locally.
The Ryzen AI Max processors effectively combine CPU and GPU resources with shared memory, allowing local models to operate alongside standard desktop applications. This capability is particularly significant for users handling larger models on conventional PCs, as it reduces the necessity of shifting every process to remote data centers.
Shifting Paradigms in Computing
This announcement signifies a broader trend among chipmakers and software companies to transition more AI processing onto personal devices.
