Halifax banking app starts shutting down: What you need to do

The Halifax app will begin its phased closure today, October 5, as part of Lloyds Banking Group’s strategic decision to retire the Halifax brand. Customers were initially alerted to this transition in September, with the bank informing them that the app would gradually shut down, culminating in a complete discontinuation by October 31.

In light of this change, customers are encouraged to transition to the Lloyds app for their online banking needs. A message dispatched to users stated, “Just a quick reminder that from 5 October, as part of the Halifax brand changing to Lloyds, we’ll start to close the Halifax app.”

By switching to the Lloyds banking app, customers will continue to manage their current accounts, savings, mortgages, credit cards, loans, and insurance seamlessly. The transition is designed to be straightforward, requiring just a few clicks.

What Halifax customers need to know

Importantly, customers will not lose any funds during this transition. Their account numbers and sort codes are expected to remain unchanged, alleviating the need for updates with employers, pension providers, or payment collection companies.

This shift follows Lloyds Banking Group’s earlier announcement regarding the retirement of the Halifax brand, consolidating its high street and digital operations under the Lloyds name. Halifax customers will receive notifications about these changes through various channels, including the app, online banking, email, and traditional mail.

The Halifax brand boasts a rich history in Britain, tracing its roots back to 1853 with the establishment of the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society in Yorkshire. Over the years, it evolved into one of the UK’s largest building societies and mortgage lenders before becoming part of Lloyds Banking Group.

Lloyds has assured customers that they will retain familiar elements, such as their account numbers and sort codes. Jas Singh, Lloyds Banking Group’s chief executive of consumer relationships, emphasized, “As Halifax changes to Lloyds, our Halifax customers will keep everything they know and love today – the same fantastic app design, the same friendly faces in our branches – even the same sort code and account number. But as Lloyds customers, they’ll get the best innovation and experiences we offer.”

This app transition is part of a broader rebranding initiative for Halifax. Over the next few years, Halifax branches will either be rebranded as Lloyds branches or relocated to nearby Lloyds locations by 2027. The banking group has also confirmed that no job cuts will be announced as part of the Halifax transformation.
