Windows 11 gains ground as price hike looms for Windows 10 security updates

In a significant move to support users of its legacy operating system, Microsoft has announced an extension of its Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This initiative allows both businesses and consumers to continue receiving crucial security updates, ensuring that their systems remain protected against emerging threats.

Consumer Enrollment and Extended Support

For consumers, the enrollment in the ESU program comes at no cost, providing an accessible option for individuals who wish to maintain their Windows 10 experience. Initially, Microsoft had indicated that these updates would be available for just one year; however, in a recent update, the company has decided to extend the consumer ESU program for an additional year, now set to conclude on October 12, 2027.

Business Pricing Structure

On the other hand, business customers face a different scenario. To enroll their devices in the ESU program, they must pay a fee. The pricing structure is tiered, beginning with an initial cost of per device for the first year. As the program progresses into its second year, this fee doubles to 2 per computer. For the third and final year, businesses will see the cost rise again, reaching 4 per device.

These escalating costs are anticipated to serve as a catalyst for many organizations to accelerate their transition to Windows 11, as they weigh the benefits of upgrading against the increasing expenses associated with maintaining their current systems.
