At the recent Windows 11 and Surface event, Microsoft unveiled a significantly enhanced Search experience, designed to be faster and more efficient. The new interface not only simplifies the process of locating files and applications but also introduces functionality that allows users to perform tasks directly from the search bar, such as toggling dark mode or adjusting volume settings.
Battery Status Widget (Experimental)
In a bid to enhance the utility of Widgets, Microsoft has introduced an experimental Battery Status widget for Insiders using newer builds. This feature provides a consolidated view of battery levels for both the PC and connected peripherals, allowing users to quickly gauge power status without navigating through various interfaces. To add this widget, users can navigate to Widgets board > Add widgets > Battery Status.
Narrator (Experimental)
The Narrator tool has also received an update, now enabling users to read and explore mathematical equations, broadening its accessibility and functionality.
Kerberos Enhancements (Experimental)
In a move to improve authentication processes, Microsoft has enabled IAKerb by default for Windows clients. This Kerberos extension facilitates successful Windows authentication in scenarios where traditional methods may falter due to a lack of direct connection to a domain controller. This enhancement aims to reduce dependency on NTLM while enhancing compatibility with modern authentication frameworks. For further details, refer to Reducing NTLM Dependency: IAKerb and LocalKDC in Windows Insider Preview.
Task Manager (Experimental)
The Task Manager is evolving to include process grouping capabilities, allowing applications to consolidate separate background processes into a unified category. This innovation simplifies the understanding of resource usage, with Microsoft Defender being the first application to utilize this feature.
Windows Update (Experimental)
Recent updates have addressed an issue affecting some Insiders with Windows Sandbox enabled, which previously resulted in error 0x80073712 during update installations.
Security (Experimental)
Enhancements to the security key PIN entry experience have been implemented, removing the “other user” icon to streamline the sign-in process.
Taskbar (Experimental)
Improvements have been made to the taskbar, resolving an issue that caused lag in app window previews for some Insiders. Additionally, the persistence of taskbar settings related to multiple monitors has been enhanced, ensuring a smoother user experience across different monitor connections.
Settings (Experimental)
The Settings interface has seen a minor update, with the backplate removed from the Settings icon when User Account Control (UAC) is invoked.
File Explorer (Experimental)
File Explorer now supports font preview and installation directly from the context menus on the desktop and within the File Explorer itself, making it easier for users to manage their font selections.
Other Improvements (Experimental)
Additionally, a fix has been implemented for an issue with msmpeg2ac3dec.dll, which had been causing some applications and games to crash.
General (Experimental (Future Platforms))
For those following the latest developments, symbols that were previously missing for the last flight should now be available in this update.
Widgets (Beta)
As part of an ongoing effort to enhance the Windows experience, the default lock screen widget setup is being updated for Insiders. The Weather widget will now take precedence on the lock screen, minimizing the clutter from recommended content and allowing users to personalize their widget selection. This can be adjusted in the Settings under Personalization > Lock screen.
The new Search experience stands out as a significant advancement, complemented by the introduction of the Battery Status widget, marking a welcome return to useful widgets in Windows 11.
