The Ukrainian branch of Metro developer 4A Games has officially adopted a new identity: Reburn. This rebranding marks a significant step for the studio as it embarks on the development of a fresh sci-fi narrative-driven shooter titled La Quimera. Notably, this new intellectual property (IP) is set to be self-published, showcasing the studio’s commitment to independence and creative freedom.
Background and Evolution
Founded in Kyiv in 2006 by industry veterans from GSC Game World, the studio initially gained recognition for its work on the Metro series. In 2014, in response to the geopolitical climate following the Russian annexation of Crimea, 4A Games relocated its headquarters to Malta. This move was strategic, allowing the studio to maintain its creative integrity while navigating challenging circumstances.
CEO Dmytro Lymar shared insights into the rebranding process, stating, “The idea was that it would be better to have the trademark remain with the Metro series, while for the new IP we would create a new brand.” The name Reburn, crafted in collaboration with a creative agency based in Kyiv, embodies the concept of renewal. Lymar elaborated, “The name means ‘burning again,’ but for us, it has the meaning similar to rebirth or reincarnation in a new form, for the creation of a new game with our own IP.” He emphasized that despite the new name, the studio remains committed to its core values: crafting exceptional games that resonate with both the team and players alike.
In a recent social media post, 4A Games clarified that the overall company has not undergone a rebranding, while extending congratulations to the Reburn team. “For clarity, we have not rebranded or changed in any way,” the studio stated. “The same founders and beating heart of the Metro series continue to work on the next Metro game from our studios in Ukraine, Malta, and remotely. We are also still at work on our other new IP as referenced in previous studio updates.”
