In a recent interview, Sheldon Carter, the president of Digital Extremes, shared insights into the contrasting trajectories of Destiny 2 and Warframe. As Destiny 2 faces challenges, Warframe has experienced “a few years of straight massive growth.” Carter reflected on the impact of the original Destiny’s launch in 2014, which prompted an initial competitive response from Digital Extremes. However, over time, the studio’s approach evolved, and Carter now views the end of Destiny 2’s development with a sense of contemplation rather than celebration.
Strategic Shifts in Development
With the announcement of Soulframe, Digital Extremes has adopted a more focused strategy. Carter explained that the studio has shifted its development and promotional tactics for Warframe, allowing it to flourish. This success has provided the team with the freedom to nurture Soulframe, which is still in pre-release, four years after its announcement. Unlike Bungie, which invested in multiple incubation projects, Digital Extremes is concentrating its efforts on a single endeavor, ensuring that they learn from past experiences while building a strong connection with their audience.
“One of the things you learn as you do a second game is that expertise doesn’t mean you won’t repeat past mistakes,” Carter noted. “It just means you can recover from them a little faster.” This philosophy has guided the development of Soulframe, emphasizing the importance of communication and trust with the player base. The team is committed to delivering a product rich in content, story, and gameplay, ensuring that it resonates with a broader audience upon release.
Warframe’s Enduring Appeal
Despite the focus on Soulframe, Carter affirmed that Warframe remains a priority. He highlighted the game’s adaptability, noting that it can be enjoyed on both cutting-edge consoles and older devices. “You can play Warframe on your PS5 Pro, and it looks sweet, cutting edge. And you can also play it on a four-generations-ago Android phone,” he explained. This versatility positions Warframe as a “forever game,” continuously updated to maintain its relevance in an ever-evolving gaming landscape.
As the gaming industry navigates challenges such as rising hardware costs, Carter expressed optimism that Warframe will continue to thrive, providing players with an accessible and engaging experience for years to come.
