Did Mojang spoil its own movie with this Minecraft add-on?

A new chapter in the Minecraft universe is set to unfold with the upcoming launch of the Minecraft Movie on April 4, 2025. In anticipation of this cinematic event, retailers are brimming with fresh merchandise that some fans have described as “a little cursed.” Alongside this, Mojang has introduced an official Minecraft Movie add-on available for free in the Minecraft Marketplace, enabling players to immerse themselves in the film’s world.

However, excitement is tempered by concerns from some fans regarding potential spoilers embedded within the add-on. While it does unveil certain character names and hints at the movie’s heroes and villains, much of the content aligns with what has already been showcased in the trailers. The Marketplace description invites players to “Wield the same wacky weapons as your favorite movie character, like Garrett’s Buck—Chuckets!”—a choice that may have been better received had it been released post-premiere. Nevertheless, players can now look forward to familiar names and weapons as they prepare for the film’s debut.

Over the weekend, I took the opportunity to explore the Minecraft Movie add-on with my son. Having delved into numerous creative add-ons previously, this one did not particularly stand out. Yet, it offered a handful of new weapons and bosses, providing us with ample enjoyment as we hunted for the new Piglins scattered throughout our world.

Two New Boss Battles

The add-on introduces players to two formidable new bosses. The first, a piglin named Malgosha, conjures explosive fireballs, sweeps back nearby enemies, and summons additional piglins for support. The second, known as the Great Hog, unleashes a barrage of fireballs from its arm cannon while delivering powerful punches to nearby foes.

New Piglins to Encounter

In addition to the bosses, players will encounter various new Piglins throughout their adventures. These additions promise to enrich the gameplay experience, inviting players to engage with the evolving Minecraft universe.

To access the add-on, players need to be using the Bedrock version of Minecraft and have an internet connection. Simply navigate to the Minecraft Marketplace, search for “A Minecraft Movie,” and download the add-on at no cost. Players will then have the option to apply it to existing worlds or create a new one. For those on PC, there’s even a mod available featuring Jack Black as the movie version of Steve.
