Dragon Quest XII finally resurfaces with its first trailer as a new Monsters game heads to Xbox and PC

After a prolonged wait, fans of the Dragon Quest series have finally been treated to a glimpse of the much-anticipated Dragon Quest 12. During a recent developer livestream hosted by Square Enix, the title has been officially updated from “Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate” to the more evocative “Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams.” The new trailer showcased the game’s stunning visuals and captivating art direction, sparking excitement among the community.

In addition to the unveiling of Dragon Quest 12, Square Enix marked the 40th anniversary of the franchise with another significant announcement: a new installment in the Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off series is in the works. Titled Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, this upcoming title will be available on multiple platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and both Nintendo Switch versions. Early details suggest that the game will feature younger iterations of beloved characters Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

Windows Central’s take

Concerns about the fate of Dragon Quest 12 had been mounting, with fans fearing a cancellation despite assurances from series creator Yuri Horii that development was ongoing. It appears that the original concept, “Flames of Fate,” encountered numerous challenges, prompting Square Enix to restart the project entirely. This decision seems to have paid off, as the first trailer reveals a game that is visually impressive, with detailed environments and fluid character movements that enhance the traditional turn-based combat system.

As for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, while I have not personally delved into the spin-off series, the inclusion of characters from Dragon Quest V piques my interest. With its release on Xbox and PC, it presents an opportunity for me to explore this facet of the franchise.
