Sony has historically been cautious about extending its PlayStation-exclusive titles to the PC platform. However, a shift in perspective is emerging, thanks in large part to the influence of PlayStation veteran Shuhei Yoshida. During a recent appearance on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, Yoshida, the former President of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), discussed the potential benefits of bringing more first-party games to PC.
Expanding Horizons
Yoshida pointed out that the traditional stance of keeping games exclusive to PlayStation was not necessarily aligned with maximizing revenue. He emphasized that releasing titles on PC opens up a wealth of opportunities. “It reaches a new audience who do not own consoles – especially in regions where consoles are not as popular,” he explained. This is particularly relevant in markets like China, where the PC gaming sector is thriving, even as console adoption grows at a slower pace.
By tapping into the PC market, Yoshida believes that Sony can engage with gamers in countries where console gaming is less prevalent. “In order to reach the audience in countries like China, it’s crucial to release on PC. So, I believe PC versions really reach a new audience,” he stated.
Financial Incentives
Beyond expanding the audience, there are also significant financial incentives to consider. Yoshida noted that porting games to PC is considerably less expensive than developing entirely new titles. “It’s almost like printing money,” he remarked, highlighting how this additional revenue stream can support investments in new projects, especially given the rising costs associated with game development.
While this strategy appears beneficial for both Sony and PC gamers, it raises concerns for existing PlayStation owners. Yoshida acknowledged that PC ports typically arrive a few years after their console counterparts, meaning that dedicated PS fans may have already experienced the game before it becomes available on PC.
