Remasters often evoke skepticism, perceived as mere cash grabs where developers dust off old titles and repackage them for a new audience. However, Biomenace Remastered emerges as a refreshing exception, crafted with genuine passion by two dedicated fans. This project breathes new life into the classic 1993 shooter, originally developed by Apogee, the studio behind iconic titles like Rise of the Triad and Duke Nukem. The duo’s journey began nearly two years ago, culminating in a successful revival that has garnered the approval of the game’s original creator.
The Genesis of a Remaster
The inception of Biomenace Remastered traces back to early 2024 when Niko, a developer at Rigel Gameworks known by the moniker ‘lethal_guitar,’ embarked on creating a “fan-made, enhanced modern engine” for the beloved 2D platformer. Upon sharing his vision with his close friend Bart, or ‘Dosgamert,’ the pair recognized the potential of their endeavor and decided to pitch it to Apogee, which is now part of 3D Realms. Although Apogee was unable to provide direct support due to its busy schedule, they acknowledged the project’s merit, provided Niko and Bart could secure the rights from the original developer, James Norwood.
In a fortunate turn of events, Norwood agreed to a licensing deal with Rigel, paving the way for the remaster to evolve into a commercial product. Fast forward eight months from that initial reveal, and Biomenace Remastered is now available on Steam, offering players a definitive experience that enhances the original while preserving its nostalgic charm.
A Modern Take on a Classic
Players are greeted with the familiar narrative: CIA specialist Snake Logan is summoned to tackle a crisis in Metro City, where monstrous creatures overrun the streets. With the government declaring martial law and communications severed, a sinister figure named Dr. Mangle issues a dire warning—comply with his demands, or face global chaos.
What begins as a reconnaissance mission quickly escalates into a ground-level battle for survival. Logan must navigate through hordes of enemies, rescue survivors, uncover the chaos’s origins, and thwart Dr. Mangle’s nefarious plans. The remaster not only revives the original three episodes, comprising 36 levels, but also introduces an exciting fourth chapter set years later, featuring an additional 15 stages, new NPCs, and two extra boss encounters.
Enhanced Features and Player Engagement
Biomenace Remastered goes beyond mere nostalgia, incorporating a built-in editor that empowers players to create their own missions. The game allows for seamless transitions between the new and classic visuals, ensuring that players can enjoy the experience that resonates with them. A quick-save feature enhances convenience, enabling players to pause their adventure at any moment.
Moreover, Rigel has integrated Steam achievements and leaderboards, adding a competitive edge to the gameplay. The remaster is also Steam Deck verified, ensuring accessibility across platforms.
Biomenace Remastered is currently available on Steam for .99 / £10.23 until December 25, thanks to a launch discount. After the sale, the price will revert to .99 / £12.79. For those curious about this heartfelt modern update to a cult classic, a free demo is also available for download.
