A recent discussion with former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio has shed light on the development timeline for PC versions of games, particularly in relation to console releases. In an interview with YouTuber KiwiTalkz, Ricchio articulated the rationale behind this staggered approach, emphasizing the practical advantages of starting with console platforms.
Development Dynamics
Ricchio explained that developing for consoles, which typically have more limited hardware capabilities, allows developers to create a game within specific constraints. This method is often more straightforward than beginning with the more powerful PC architecture and then scaling down. “It’s always better to start with the constraints and then extend,” he stated. “Because shrinking is a lot harder than extending. It’s way harder to make your game performant than it is to just be like ‘Oh, we’ve got extra room? Cool, we can deoptimize or make things more shiny.'”
Reflecting on his time at Rockstar during the early 2010s, Ricchio recounted discussions surrounding resource allocation. He noted that while a PC build of Red Dead Redemption existed during its development, the decision to delay its release was influenced by the prioritization of resources for Grand Theft Auto 5. “It’s always those conversations,” he remarked. “It’s never any specific, you know, anti-any platform. It’s just, is it worth spending the time and effort to get something running on Switch, or something like that, or Wii, who knows?”
Resource Allocation and Business Considerations
Ricchio emphasized the importance of making informed decisions based on the potential return on investment for each project. “There has to be enough of a business reason to do some of those ports, or the lift has to be so light that it’s like, ‘Oh, it’ll be super easy to do.’ And it’s rarely super light; there’s always something that you’ve got to do.”
Despite the growing popularity of PC gaming over the last decade, fans of the franchise had hoped for a simultaneous release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC alongside its console debut. However, Ricchio’s insights suggest that the complexity of developing such an ambitious title means that resource allocation remains a critical factor in the decision-making process.
As Rockstar gears up for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19th for Xbox Series X|S and PS5, it appears that the studio’s focus is firmly on delivering a polished product, with all hands on deck to ensure its successful release.
