Here’s how Google describes its fee-reducing Apps Experience and Games Level Up programs

Google’s Push for More Apps on Various Devices

Google is aiming to expand the presence of apps on a wide range of devices, including tablets, headsets, TVs, and PCs. The tech giant recently made significant changes to its app store fee structure, following legal challenges in the US.

Starting in July, developers will see a reduction in fees, with in-app purchases now charged at 20 percent and subscriptions at 10 percent, depending on the region. Google has also introduced new categories of apps, such as “metaverse browsers,” with details yet to be revealed.

Two new programs, Apps Experience and Games Level Up, offer developers the opportunity to save even more on fees by optimizing their apps for multiple devices beyond phones. These devices include XR headsets, Android TVs, PCs, and Android Auto, while integrating with Google services and adhering to specific guidelines.

Notably, Google emphasizes that app distribution on all form factors is not mandatory, providing developers with flexibility in their app deployment strategies.

Games Level Up Program

a. Developers must publish titles on various form factors with exemplary quality, starting in 2026 for Mobile & Large Screen and in 2027 for XR, TV, Auto, and other platforms. Requirements include stability, quality, and adherence to Android platform standards.
b. Developers must ensure a consistent gaming experience across titles, integrating with Google services and supporting Play’s Gamer Platform.

Apps Experience Program

a. Developers must publish apps on all required form factors with high quality, meeting stability and quality standards. Requirements vary based on the app’s category and include maintaining feature parity with other platforms.
b. Developers must offer a consistent app experience, integrating with Google services and supporting Play’s Content discovery experiences.

Google plans to implement these programs gradually, starting in select regions and expanding globally by the end of 2027. These initiatives aim to encourage developers to optimize their apps for a diverse range of devices, potentially enhancing the overall user experience across different platforms.
