Hytale’s Vampire Survivors Mod Shows Why Fans Are So Hyped

Hypixel Studios, the creative force behind the Minecraft-inspired survival game Hytale, has recently unveiled a glimpse into the game’s modding potential, igniting excitement among its fanbase ahead of the anticipated Early Access launch later this month. In a social media update over the weekend, co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme shared a captivating 40-second gameplay clip that features a character battling voxel-based hordes in a top-down arena, reminiscent of the popular Vampire Survivors style.

Collins-Laflamme revealed that the showcased mod was crafted by a team member during their leisure time, serving as a proof-of-concept demonstration for how diverse genres can be explored within Hytale by its community of fans and modders. He emphasized that this gameplay snippet represents merely a small fraction of the modding capabilities available, designed to illustrate a straightforward, survivor-like experience.

While this particular mod is not slated for inclusion in the game’s official release, Hypixel has hinted at the possibility of publishing it, or similar examples, as reference material for the community’s creative endeavors.

This exciting announcement comes on the heels of Hypixel’s recent reacquisition of the rights to Hytale from Riot Games, the studio behind League of Legends, which had previously halted the project in June of last year. Following this, the team released a 16-minute gameplay trailer, but the latest clip emphasizes Hytale’s capacity to serve as a launchpad for user-generated content, akin to the success of its predecessor.

Hytale is gearing up for Early Access

In a recent exchange on X, Collins-Laflamme expressed optimism about the game’s initial reception, predicting a strong launch followed by a gradual slowdown until modders and the development team begin to roll out significant content updates. He believes this will foster sustained growth over the years, particularly as more modding tools and options are introduced.

However, the co-founder also conveyed a sense of frustration as the early access launch date of January 13 approaches. He reflected on the four years dedicated to engineering a new game engine, which, in his view, has resulted in a “four-year gap” and a considerable amount of catching up to do. He noted that the rebuilt engine may not even be utilized as intended.

As previously outlined in a FAQ, Hytale will not be available on Steam at launch, a strategic decision aimed at prioritizing the existing community and avoiding a potential influx of cold first impressions that could misguide the game’s direction. Hypixel is keen on receiving constructive feedback from players who are already familiar with the game’s development journey.

Importantly, the FAQ also highlighted that Steam “currently doesn’t support” certain modding features of Hytale. The developer plans to engage with Valve in the near future to address these limitations, indicating that it may take some time before Steam users can fully immerse themselves in the platform’s latest offerings within Hytale.
