Live-action Far Cry TV series starring It’s Always Sunny’s Rob Mac will mimic the games’ standalone format, with each season given ‘a new setting following a new cast of characters’

In a curious turn of events, Ubisoft has once again confirmed the development of a live-action Far Cry television series, this time with a more pronounced announcement. Originally unveiled in August, the news seemed to vanish from the company’s website shortly after its debut, leading to speculation about its fate. However, Ubisoft has re-emerged with renewed clarity, reiterating the show’s existence and providing additional insights.

Creative Collaboration

The series is co-created by Noah Hawley, known for his work on the acclaimed Fargo series, and Rob McElhenney, widely recognized for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Hawley expressed his enthusiasm for the Far Cry franchise, describing it as an anthology where each installment presents a unique variation on a central theme. “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” he stated.

According to Ubisoft, the show will mirror the games’ structure, with each season set in a distinct location and featuring a new ensemble of characters. McElhenney, who will serve as an executive producer and star in the series, acknowledged the privilege of working within such a renowned video game universe. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created,” he remarked.

Endless Possibilities

With a plethora of stunning locales to draw inspiration from—ranging from Micronesia and Central Africa to Southeast Asia and Montana—the creative team has a rich tapestry to explore. Fans of the franchise may even wonder if the series will venture into the less-discussed realms of the Far Cry universe, such as the prehistoric setting of Far Cry Primal. The prospect of McElhenney portraying a caveman certainly adds a whimsical twist to the anticipated series.

This adaptation marks another chapter in the Far Cry franchise’s journey across various media. While a previous attempt at a film adaptation in 2008 was met with criticism, the recent Netflix animated series, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, has garnered a more favorable reception. As anticipation builds for the live-action series, viewers are left to ponder the creative directions it may take, all while enjoying the thrill of action set against breathtaking backdrops.
