Microsoft is looking to speed up development of future Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Halo games

The revival of Xbox is underway, yet the path ahead remains fraught with challenges and uncertainties. While the return of console exclusives signals a renewed commitment to the gaming landscape, the extent of this resurgence is still unclear. The anticipated “reset” aimed at fostering a brighter future may come at a significant cost, potentially leading to job losses for hundreds of employees. In a recent report from The Information, as relayed by Reuters, Microsoft is contemplating a strategic pivot, focusing its resources on its most prominent gaming titles while also considering the drastic step of divesting the Xbox division entirely.

Potential Changes on the Horizon

According to three sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft has not dismissed the idea of spinning off the Xbox division into a standalone entity or transforming it into a wholly-owned subsidiary. Additionally, there are discussions about a possible joint venture with unnamed partners, which could facilitate a smoother sale of Xbox following its anticipated overhaul. While no immediate changes are on the table, the range of options being considered is broad and varied.

In the realm of game releases, the anticipation surrounding titles like Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls VI continues to build, with fans left waiting for substantial updates. It has been 15 years since the release of Skyrim and eight years since the announcement of The Elder Scrolls VI, yet the gaming community is still met with only a vague teaser and no official title.

Similarly, the Halo franchise has faced stagnation. As noted by PC Gamer’s Rory Norris, Halo has been “treading water” since Microsoft established 343 Industries to guide the franchise after Bungie’s departure nearly 15 years ago. Halo Infinite, which was intended to represent the future of the series as a live service, saw its content updates cease in 2025, just four years post-launch. While there is no desire for annualized releases from Bethesda, it is understandable why Microsoft might feel the pressure to expedite progress.

Despite possessing a significant advantage over other corporate giants through its ownership of some of the most iconic names in gaming, the question remains whether Microsoft is willing to capitalize on this potential and invest the necessary effort to revitalize the Xbox brand. I have reached out to Microsoft for comments regarding the possibility of an Xbox spinoff and will provide updates should a response be received.
