Microsoft’s ‘Xbox mode’ is coming to every Windows 11 PC

Microsoft is intensifying its efforts to merge the realms of Xbox and Windows, with the upcoming next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, set to support PC games. The alpha phase for Helix is slated to commence in 2027, but Microsoft is not waiting idly. Starting in April, the company will introduce a new “Xbox mode” for all Windows 11 devices, including laptops, desktops, and tablets.

Previously, users could access the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) in a preview format since November 2025, provided they were part of both the Windows Insider and Xbox Insider Programs. However, the initial rollout required refinement and a more fitting name. When it debuted on the Asus-designed Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X handhelds, it fell short of transforming the PC experience into a seamless Xbox interface.

With Microsoft now firmly backing the notion that PC gaming is integral to the Xbox future, improvements are anticipated. The Xbox Ally has seen consistent updates, with the more expensive variant now offering a level of reliability that has historically been elusive for Windows handhelds.

Enhancements for Developers

At the 2026 Game Developers Conference, Microsoft announced the opening of Advanced Shader Delivery to all developers within the Xbox store. This feature allows for expedited game load times by delivering precompiled shaders alongside game downloads, a technique already prevalent in console gaming and utilized by Valve with Steam.

Moreover, Microsoft hinted at the potential revival of classic Xbox titles for PC, stating, “As part of our 25th anniversary later this year, we’ll be rolling out new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past.”

For those with a technical inclination, Microsoft’s blog offers a wealth of information regarding GDC announcements, including advancements in DirectX, which is moving towards neural rendering, and DirectStorage, designed to facilitate faster movement of game assets for improved load times. Additionally, updates on graphics debugging were shared.

For a comprehensive overview of Microsoft’s initiatives at GDC, a live report from the company’s Future of Xbox keynote is available, detailing the strategic direction the tech giant is taking in the gaming landscape.
