NetEase divests Fantastic Pixel Castle

In a notable shift within the gaming landscape, Chinese gaming giant NetEase has decided to withdraw its support from yet another foreign game studio, this time impacting Fantastic Pixel. The announcement came from Greg Street, the head of the studio, who shared the news via LinkedIn. He expressed concerns that the company may face closure in the near future if it cannot secure alternative backing.

Challenges Ahead for Fantastic Pixel

Street emphasized the ongoing efforts to find a new publisher for their in-development game, stating, “We’re doing everything we can to find a publisher or investor.” He also highlighted the importance of supporting his team during this uncertain period, encouraging them to explore new opportunities as the situation unfolds.

He candidly acknowledged the potential consequences, noting, “If we’re unable to find a publisher soon, the reality is that the studio would likely close, and the entire team, leadership included, would be affected.” This sentiment underscores the precarious nature of the gaming industry, especially for smaller studios navigating financial challenges.

In his message, Street extended gratitude to the Ghost community, playtesters, and the numerous individuals who have offered guidance in these trying times. “I hope you all will have a chance to play Ghost,” he added, reflecting a commitment to the project despite the looming uncertainties.

Fantastic Pixel Castle was first announced in November 2023, marking it as the latest casualty in a series of closures linked to NetEase’s strategic realignments. As the industry continues to evolve, the fate of Fantastic Pixel remains uncertain, leaving both the team and its supporters in a state of anticipation.
