Fallout 76 is set to embark on an exciting new journey with its upcoming update, Burning Springs, which will transport players across the river into Ohio. This expansion promises to be a significant evolution for the game, building on its reputation as one of the premier survival experiences on PC. Creative director Jon Rush and lead producer Bill LaCoste recently shared insights into this ambitious update, which they describe as the “biggest update ever.” The release is timed to coincide with Season 2 of the Fallout series on Amazon Prime, slated for December, with an early access opportunity available soon on the Public Test Server (PTS).
Exploring Ohio’s New Terrain
Players will cross the Silver Bridge in the north-west to enter the new territory of Ohio, where much of the action in Burning Springs unfolds. Upon arrival, adventurers will encounter the imposing Checkpoint Canyon, fortified by the fierce Rust Guards. The narrative quickly escalates as players find themselves captured by the Rust King, a formidable Super Mutant who commands an arena and seeks to test the mettle of our Vault Dweller. Successfully navigating his challenges grants players a temporary reprieve and points them toward a character named Runt, located in the aptly named Highway Town.
Highway Town, a unique establishment built from a dilapidated stretch of elevated road, serves as a hub for players to engage with Runt, who is entangled in the Rust King’s operations. Here, players can earn favor with the Rust King through various trials, only to be confronted by Eugene, a former companion presumed dead. Eugene proposes a daring plan to dismantle the Rust King’s empire, leading players on a quest to recruit allies for their cause.
New Bounty System and Familiar Faces
Among the exciting features of Burning Springs is the introduction of a bounty system, spearheaded by The Ghoul, a fan-favorite character from the Prime series, voiced by Walton Goggins. Players can engage in low-stakes ‘Grunt Hunts’ across 20 locations in Ohio, offering straightforward objectives that yield decent rewards. For those seeking a greater challenge, tougher contracts known as Head Hunts are available, initiating public events that invite collaboration among players on the server. With only one Head Hunt active at a time, these events promise unique rewards, caps, and experience points, fostering a dynamic gameplay experience.
The developers have hinted at the potential for expanding this bounty system across the entire map, contingent on player interest. In a light-hearted exchange, Rush and LaCoste discussed the implications of bounties, showcasing the camaraderie and humor that permeates their development process.
New Features and Events Await
Ohio’s relatively unexplored lore provides a creative canvas for the team, allowing for innovative gameplay elements. Players can establish camps, discover new fish species, and uncover local legends. Rush teased intriguing possibilities, including unique discoveries linked to nuclear events in the region, although Highway Town remains off-limits for such activities. Additionally, players who have transitioned into ghouls will find tailored features awaiting them.
Burning Springs will also introduce two new public events. The first, Sinkhole Solutions, involves battling Radscorpions and a Legendary Burning Ogua, while the second event at Jackson Junkyard tasks players with assisting the Beastmaster in outfitting Deathclaws with armor. This mission culminates in a challenging encounter with a Legendary Deathclaw Matriarch, ensuring that players will need to strategize and collaborate to succeed.
The Fallout 76 Burning Springs update will be available on the PTS starting October 2, featuring interactions with The Ghoul and setting the stage for the full release in December, which will also include Season 23, titled ‘Blood and Rust.’ While the release date for Fallout 5 remains unannounced, the evolution of Fallout 76 into a robust and engaging experience makes it a compelling choice for both newcomers and seasoned fans of the franchise. Players are encouraged to join the conversation in the PCGamesN community Discord server to share their thoughts and showcase their Camp builds.
