PC Gamer Repurposes Old SSDs to Create a Steam Game Cartridge System

In a landscape where gaming technology continually evolves, one innovative PC user has reimagined the concept of cartridge gaming by leveraging the capabilities of modern hardware. Jibril-sama, a Redditor, has ingeniously transformed old 2.5″ SSDs into a new form of gaming cartridge system, showcasing a blend of creativity and technical prowess.

Reviving Cartridge Gaming

While companies like Nintendo maintain a nostalgic connection to cartridge media, Jibril-sama’s approach offers a unique twist that capitalizes on the power of personal computers. By repurposing used 2.5″ SSDs, the user has created a system that not only retains the charm of classic gaming but also harnesses the performance potential of contemporary technology. The SSDs, acquired for approximately each, serve as the foundation for this inventive project.

According to Jibril-sama, the setup involves a few minor software tweaks and custom printed labels, along with a docking station to enhance the user experience. “Games are actually on those SSDs with a script to auto-navigate Steam to the game’s page. Auto-starting the game right away is also possible,” they explained, highlighting the seamless integration of functionality and nostalgia.

For many PC gamers, the rising costs of memory and storage can be daunting. However, Jibril-sama’s project offers a practical solution for those with spare drives, allowing them to free up space on their primary gaming setups while still enjoying the benefits of SATA III speeds. This ensures that even as gaming requirements evolve, the system remains capable of supporting many titles well into the future.

In a conversation with Tom’s Hardware, Jibril-sama elaborated on the technical aspects of their configuration: “All it needs is a systemd template to check for a script on the SSD and launch it. And a udev rule to trigger the system. So basically: Plug in SSD -> udev rule sees the event -> triggers the systemd daemon -> systemd daemon looks into the SSD and finds the script -> execute the script.” This streamlined process exemplifies the potential for innovation within the gaming community, encouraging others to explore similar creative avenues.

As discussions around this inventive project continue to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities that arise when technology meets imagination in the gaming world.
