Peak’s success helped Aggro Crab commit to co-op, says studio head: ‘We thought we were a character action studio’

The collaborative effort between Peak, Aggro Crab, and Landfall Games emerged from a whirlwind four-week game jam, where creativity was unleashed at an unprecedented pace. In a recent conversation at the Game Developers Conference, Aggro Crab’s studio head, Nick Kaman, shared insights with PC Gamer editor Ted Litchfield about the transformative experience that not only shifted their focus to smaller projects but also solidified their identity in the co-op gaming space. Kaman remarked, “We worked on this game with another dev studio, which is pretty uncommon, right? This is way more in their wheelhouse.”

He elaborated on their collaboration with a studio known for its successful title, Content Warning, which had garnered attention as one of the pioneering entries in the friendslop genre. The previous project had left the team feeling fatigued after three years of development, but the rapid creation of Peak revitalized their spirits. Kaman expressed, “There’s so much that hasn’t been explored yet, and there are so many interesting things you can do in the context of social games.”

Expanding Horizons with Crashout Crew

This invigorated outlook paved the way for the upcoming release of Crashout Crew, set to launch later this week. Kaman described the game as drawing inspiration from Overcooked rather than strictly adhering to the friendslop formula, while still incorporating elements from that style. Notable features include proximity voice chat—an unconventional choice for a top-down game—and mouth animations that activate when players speak into their microphones. “It’s kind of an experiment. Can we push it a little more toward friendslop, and does that enhance the experience?” he pondered.

While Kaman acknowledges that this new direction may not resonate with everyone, he remains enthusiastic about the studio’s evolution. “If people miss Another Crab’s Treasure and are like, ‘Why are you guys a friendslop studio now?’ I’m sorry, I get it, you guys want that side of us. But right now for us, this is just more exciting,” he concluded, embracing the thrill of innovation in the gaming landscape.
