Rockstar Games has officially announced a shift in the release date for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, now slated for May 26, 2026. This revelation came through a heartfelt message shared on Twitter, where the studio expressed its gratitude for the overwhelming interest and excitement surrounding the new installment in the iconic franchise.
In their statement, Rockstar acknowledged the patience of fans, emphasizing their commitment to delivering a game that not only meets but exceeds expectations. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception,” the studio noted. They reassured fans that the additional time is essential for achieving the high standards associated with the Grand Theft Auto brand.
Support from Leadership
In a subsequent release to investors, Strauss Zelnick, CEO and chair of parent company Take-Two Interactive, voiced his full support for Rockstar’s decision. He highlighted the importance of allowing the development team the necessary time to realize their creative vision for the game. “We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations,” Zelnick stated.
Originally scheduled for a fall 2025 release, the delay has sparked a collective sigh of relief among other developers and publishers planning to launch titles in the latter half of this year. Zelnick further assured stakeholders of Take-Two’s ongoing commitment to excellence, stating, “While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence.” He expressed confidence in the company’s robust pipeline of upcoming releases, anticipating a multi-year period of growth and enhanced value for shareholders.
