Amplitude Studios has unveiled the final faction available at launch: the Tahuk, a group characterized by their fervent devotion and unique approach to the intertwining realms of science and faith. Under the guidance of indie publisher Hooded Horse, this long-awaited sequel is poised to make its debut, and the Tahuk are set to bring an intriguing dynamic to the gameplay on Saiadha.
Having cherished the original Endless Legend alongside Civ 5, my excitement for Endless Legend 2 has only grown, especially as the latest installment in the Civilization series appears to be still in development. My early experiences with the game have been promising, hinting at a diverse array of factions that mirror the complexity of the original. However, two factions were notably absent from my initial playthrough, leaving me eager to explore their unique attributes.
Among the factions I missed was the Last Lords, an evolution of my favorite group from the first game. Yet, it is the Tahuk who have captured my attention as a compelling choice for my initial playthrough. Senior narrative and game designer Nitya Abdoul Carime elaborates on the Tahuk’s distinctive blend of faith and technology, which presents a fascinating challenge in their quest for success within the game’s universe.
“They hope their devotion will bring back the Sages, and watch the stars for signs of their return,” Carime explains, highlighting the central role of the Sacred Oculum—a powerful Endless relic. This device allows players to channel scientific advancements into various formidable abilities. Whether it’s harnessing its power to create ‘eternal sunshine’ for enhanced productivity, rallying national faith, or wielding it as a devastating weapon, the possibilities are as expansive as they are strategic.
The landscape of Saiadha is dynamic, influenced by the Tidefall mechanic that alters the game’s maps as water levels fluctuate, revealing new paths and opportunities. Carime notes that these transformative events can disrupt the fragile equilibrium within the Tahuk council, potentially reshaping their perceptions of both faith and technology.
In terms of gameplay, the Tahuk can deploy their most devoted followers as missionaries to gather intelligence and resources from rival empires. They also have the capability to construct observatories on mountain ridges, which can be upgraded into either libraries to enhance economic growth or ‘sacred flames’ that serve as formidable defensive turrets against enemy incursions.
On the battlefield, the Tahuk favor ranged combat, with their Devotees being the only units engaging in close-quarters fighting. Their arsenal includes nimble archers and powerful artillery, with all attacks from Tahuk units inflicting an ‘illuminated’ status on their targets. This mechanic provides a tactical advantage, granting defensive bonuses to melee troops while amplifying the damage dealt by ranged attackers. Players are encouraged to strategically focus their fire on illuminated foes to maximize their effectiveness in combat.
Endless Legend 2 is set to launch into early access on September 22, available through Steam and the Microsoft Store, with access also provided on PC Game Pass from day one.
