Star Citizen alpha 4.8 is set to make its debut today, bringing with it a more extensive wipe than initially anticipated by the developer, Cloud Imperium Games (CIG). Originally, the studio outlined plans to reset players’ in-game resources, vehicles acquired through the in-game currency aUEC, and the currency balance itself. However, the decision to retain ships and gear obtained through trading with NPC Wikelo raised concerns within the community. In light of this feedback, CIG has opted for a more thorough approach to the reset.
Community Response and Developer Adjustments
In a recent forum post, CIG addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding the upcoming wipe. The developer acknowledged the community’s concerns regarding the prevalence of duplication tricks and exploits that have been affecting the game. Players have expressed frustration over the visibility of high-end rewards from Wikelo being flaunted across the galaxy, leading to accusations that CIG is inadvertently encouraging cheating.
One user voiced their discontent, stating, “CIG is encouraging players to cheat. We all know how difficult it is to redeem Wikelo’s large ships, and how those Wikelo ships that are flying all over the universe were obtained. Yet CIG chose to ignore them.” Another thread pointed out the widespread duplication of various items, which is disrupting the in-game economy and item market. “Unless you are deeply involved in trading networks, Discord communities, or high-volume market activity, most players will never see what is really happening behind the scenes,” they noted.
In response to these issues, CIG has revised its plans for alpha 4.8. The studio confirmed that the upcoming release will feature a comprehensive wipe, resetting all earned aUEC, in-game purchased vehicles, items, resources, reputation progression, and rewards from Wikelo and the Executive Hangar. However, players will retain their blueprints and any items or vehicles listed in the ‘My Hangar’ section on the Roberts Space Industries website.
“As previously mentioned, this reset is an important step toward stabilizing the economy as new systems continue coming online,” CIG stated. The studio also highlighted that alongside the wipe, additional safeguards have been implemented to mitigate exploits and duplication issues, with further improvements planned for the future. They expressed gratitude for the community’s feedback and assured players that they would be closely monitoring the rollout of the new update.
Star Citizen alpha 4.8 launches today, May 13. Among the exciting new features is the introduction of Tactical Strike Groups, a cooperative gameplay mode where players can team up with friends to tackle various missions. Additionally, ship hangar services will now be available, allowing certain spacecraft equipped with the necessary facilities to provide repairs, refueling, and rearming for others landing in their bays. To celebrate the launch, a free fly event will take place for DefenseCon, running from May 14 to May 27.
