‘Steam is winning with its ease of use,’ GOG’s new owner says, but he’s not interested in picking a fight: ‘I think much can be done in GOG without losing its core values and the way it operates’

CD Projekt has concluded 2025 with a significant transition, selling its DRM-free digital storefront, GOG, to Michal Kiciński, a co-founder of both CD Projekt and GOG. Since its inception, GOG has evolved from a platform dedicated solely to classic titles to one that includes a variety of newer releases. However, despite its growth, GOG has remained a niche player in the gaming market and has not been a substantial revenue generator for CD Projekt.

Future Prospects for GOG

In a recent conversation with GamesIndustry, Kiciński and GOG’s managing director, Maciej Gołębiewski, expressed optimism about the platform’s potential for success, even in a market largely dominated by Steam. Gołębiewski noted that GOG’s ongoing development is a testament to its unique position in the industry, emphasizing its mission to ensure that games endure over time.

While acknowledging Steam’s impressive performance, Gołębiewski highlighted the differing values between the two platforms. He stated, “Certainly we can do more for classic retro and modern classics in terms of accessibility, in terms of discoverability.” GOG is expanding its catalog of new game releases, a trend attributed to the increasing willingness of independent studios to collaborate with alternative storefronts. However, the platform is not aiming to compete directly with Steam in terms of volume.

Kiciński emphasized the importance of GOG’s unique identity, stating, “GOG has its own strengths and really should focus on maintaining them and even strengthening them.” He believes there is no need for GOG to emulate others, as its distinctiveness is valued by gamers.

Curated Experience and User-Friendliness

GOG prides itself on being a “very curated platform,” a stark contrast to Steam’s approach of releasing hundreds of games daily, many of which lack high quality. Kiciński pointed out that this curation is one of GOG’s strengths. However, he also acknowledged that there are areas where GOG could improve by adopting some of Steam’s user-friendly features. “Steam is winning with its ease of use,” he remarked, suggesting that GOG could enhance its functionality without compromising its core values.

While the perception of ease may stem from Steam’s ubiquity, GOG’s straightforward “download, install, play” philosophy is arguably a more genuine form of user-friendliness. Nonetheless, Kiciński recognized that GOG’s Galaxy client, while functional, could benefit from a more intuitive design to enhance the user experience.

Commitment to DRM-Free Gaming

Under Kiciński’s stewardship, GOG will maintain its foundational principle of being a DRM-free platform. He affirmed, “This is a core value of GOG, and there’s no signs that it might die in any visible future.” This commitment is not only ethical but also practical, allowing gamers to enjoy their titles regardless of the platform’s software stability or internet connectivity.
