Steam now generates three times more revenue for Capcom than PlayStation

Capcom’s recent financial report reveals a transformative moment for the company, as it pivots towards a burgeoning market: PC gaming, particularly through the Steam platform, has emerged as a significant revenue generator. In the last fiscal year, the majority of Capcom’s game sales were attributed to PC, with Steam alone contributing three times the revenue of PlayStation.

Steam’s Rising Influence

According to Capcom’s securities report for the fiscal year ending March 31, Steam accounted for an impressive 31% of the company’s total revenue. This represents a substantial growth of approximately 38% in revenue from the platform. Specifically, sales on Steam generated 52.7 billion yen (around 3.4 million) for Capcom, a notable increase from the previous year’s 5 million.

The success of titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, which achieved remarkable popularity on its launch day, likely played a pivotal role in this revenue surge, despite its late release in the fiscal period. Additionally, ongoing sales of earlier major releases and re-releases from Capcom’s back catalog have contributed to this upward trend.

The report indicates a significant increase in Steam’s share of Capcom’s revenue, rising from 21% in the previous year to over one-third in the latest fiscal year. This marks a notable shift for a company historically recognized for its arcade and console titles, as PC gaming revenue has now eclipsed that of PlayStation.

While the report does not disclose PlayStation’s exact revenue share for the most recent fiscal year, it was recorded at just 10.5% the year before. Given Steam’s continued growth, it is likely that PlayStation’s share has dipped below the 10% mark. It’s important to note that the report encompasses revenue from all facets of the company, extending beyond just digital and physical game sales.

Looking ahead, Capcom anticipates that console revenue will surpass PC earnings through 2027, although the bulk of its revenue is expected to stem from mobile and digital PC game sales, predominantly occurring on Steam. Digital PC game sales have already become the majority of Capcom’s unit sales.

A recent presentation highlighted that out of the 51 million games sold by Capcom in the last fiscal year, a remarkable 28 million were digital PC games, underscoring a significant shift in the company’s sales strategy.

As Capcom continues to innovate, it has recently announced Resident Evil Requiem, the latest installment in its iconic horror franchise, slated for release on February 27, 2026, barring any delays. Additionally, two major titles, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and the highly anticipated Pragmata, are expected to play crucial roles in the company’s future fiscal performance.
