Steam Enhances Wishlist and Gifting Features
The Steam wishlist has long been a cornerstone of the Valve store, serving as a vital tool for gamers to keep tabs on anticipated titles and potential purchases. In a recent update, Valve has introduced a series of enhancements that elevate this feature, making it more user-friendly and versatile than ever before. Alongside these wishlist improvements, the gifting process has also received a thoughtful redesign, offering new avenues for sharing games with friends and family.
Valve acknowledges the growing trend of players curating extensive wishlists, stating, “With so many amazing games on Steam, players are wishlisting more and more titles.” To cater to this demand, the company has rolled out customizable wishlist categories. Users can now tag their desired games with personalized labels—be it ‘buy day one,’ ‘wait for sale,’ or ‘watching early access.’ This flexibility allows for a more organized approach to managing game preferences, as players can filter their lists by category with ease. The most frequently used tags will conveniently appear in the ‘Add to Wishlist’ dropdown menu, streamlining the process of saving new titles.
Beyond categorization, Valve has enhanced the overall wishlist experience. The search functionality has been upgraded to include autocomplete features, making it easier to locate specific games. Additionally, titles with available demos are now clearly marked, and users can opt to receive notifications for new demo releases. The introduction of ‘microtrailers’—short video clips that play upon hovering over a game’s image—adds a dynamic element to the browsing experience, ensuring that users can quickly revisit their interests as they navigate through the store.
Sharing wishlists has also become more refined. Users can now generate custom URLs to share specific categories from their wishlists, allowing recipients to view curated selections without exposing the entirety of their wishlist. This feature is particularly useful for special occasions, such as birthdays, and can be easily revoked once the need has passed.
For those whose friends and family may not be on Steam, the gifting enhancements are noteworthy. The newly introduced guest checkout feature allows anyone to gift a game without needing a Steam account. If someone accesses a shared wishlist link, they can click ‘Purchase as a gift’ directly from the page, simplifying the gifting process significantly.
Moreover, Valve has rolled out email gifting options, enabling users to send game gifts directly to an email address, even if they do not know the recipient’s Steam account details. However, there are some limitations: email gifts must be accepted within 30 days to avoid automatic refunds, cannot be scheduled for future delivery, and must be sent to individuals residing in the same region.
Cross-region gifting has also been introduced, allowing users to send gifts to friends in different locations. Steam will automatically calculate the appropriate cost based on the recipient’s region, making it possible to share games across borders, albeit at potentially higher prices than local purchases. To utilize this feature, users must be friends with the recipient on Steam.
While it may seem amusing to highlight a store’s new methods for encouraging purchases, these updates represent significant usability improvements for a platform that many gamers already frequent. The wishlist enhancements, in particular, offer a practical solution for those managing extensive collections, making it easier to prioritize and organize titles based on individual buying motivations.
