Steam’s most‑wishlisted games reveal an unexpected frontrunner — and Xbox Game Studios is holding strong

Alinea Analytics has once again provided valuable insights into the gaming landscape, this time revealing the most-wishlisted games on Steam set to release in 2026. Topping the list is the highly anticipated Subnautica 2, a sequel that has generated significant excitement, particularly due to the enduring popularity of its predecessor. The original Subnautica, which debuted in 2018, captivated players with its expansive underwater world, and fans have long awaited the introduction of co-op multiplayer features, which Subnautica 2 is poised to deliver. Currently, it boasts an impressive 3.8 million wishlists on Steam, affirming its status as a frontrunner in pre-launch enthusiasm. Additionally, it will support Xbox Play Anywhere and is expected to be available on Xbox Game Pass, despite its delay from 2025 to 2026.

Forza Horizon 6

Following closely is Forza Horizon 6, which has secured the number two spot with an estimated 2.6 million wishlists. This upcoming title from Xbox Game Studios has already sold 220,000 copies on Steam ahead of its launch. Set against a vibrant Japanese backdrop, the game promises a mix of urban racing and scenic countryside drives, breathing new life into its open-world formula. Like Subnautica 2, Forza Horizon 6 will also launch as an Xbox Play Anywhere title and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from its release date of May 19, 2026.

Completing the top three is Resident Evil Requiem, which has garnered an estimated 2.5 million wishlists. This third-person action horror game features the return of Leon, who must confront the T-virus alongside a new character, Grace Ashcroft. Players will experience gameplay from both characters’ perspectives, blending survival horror with combat-focused moments. Despite its excitement, Resident Evil Requiem will not be available on Game Pass or support Xbox Play Anywhere, which may influence its reception upon release on February 26, 2026.

Reading between the Steam Wishlist lines

The latest wishlist data from Steam serves as a compelling reminder that player interest often diverges from marketing trends and platform expectations. The unexpected popularity of Subnautica 2 highlights a shift in gamer preferences, while the strong showing of Xbox-published titles underscores Microsoft’s effective strategy in appealing to a dedicated audience. As the gaming community eagerly anticipates these releases, the wishlist rankings provide a fascinating glimpse into the current hype surrounding upcoming titles.
