Starbreeze is venturing into new territory with its latest offering in the Payday franchise, introducing a virtual reality experience titled Payday: Aces High. This co-op heist game retains the series’ hallmark elements of planning, teamwork, and the signature chaos that players have come to expect, but it has been meticulously crafted for the immersive world of VR.
Development and Features
In this installment, players will step into the shoes of four elite bank robbers, donning suits and clown masks as they navigate through increasingly chaotic heists. The game promises to deliver the same adrenaline-pumping action that has defined the series, albeit in a more engaging format. Developed by Fast Travel Games, a studio known for titles such as Cities: VR and Vampire: The Masquerade: Justice, Aces High aims to elevate the Payday experience by fully utilizing the capabilities of virtual reality.
Supporting up to four players in co-op multiplayer, the game also caters to those who prefer solo play, acknowledging the challenges of assembling a team of VR headset owners. This move follows the release of a VR version of Payday 2 in 2018, which received a positive reception, further solidifying the studio’s commitment to the VR space.
Strategic Vision
Starbreeze’s CEO, Adolf Kristjansson, emphasized the studio’s strategic vision: “This latest move is part of our strategy to expand Payday through selected licensing partnerships and new entertainment formats.” He expressed confidence in Fast Travel Games, highlighting their extensive experience in VR development and assuring fans that Aces High is not merely an adaptation but a game built from the ground up for the medium.
Challenges Ahead
However, the road ahead is not without its challenges. Starbreeze is currently navigating a tumultuous period, with Payday 3 facing significant issues and ongoing layoffs affecting the company. The cancellation of a highly anticipated co-op D&D game earlier this year has added to the uncertainty surrounding the studio’s future.
While Aces High may be poised to capture the interest of both fans and newcomers, its success remains to be seen. The gaming landscape has shown that even well-received titles can struggle commercially, as evidenced by Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed VR game, which, despite positive player feedback, did not meet sales expectations. This has led to a reevaluation of VR investments across the industry, with Meta recently shuttering several VR studios as part of a broader strategy shift.
Looking Ahead
As anticipation builds, Payday: Aces High is set to launch in the third quarter of 2026, specifically between July 1 and September 30. It will be available exclusively for Meta Quest and SteamVR headsets, and players can already wishlist it on Steam and the Meta Store. The coming months will reveal whether this new venture can reinvigorate the franchise and steer Starbreeze toward a brighter future.
