In a notable advancement for travel planning, visitors to New Zealand can now access an innovative AI trip planner, courtesy of Matador Network’s GuideGeek platform. This cutting-edge tool is designed to inspire and assist travelers, while also supporting the launch of Tourism New Zealand’s immersive destination within the popular game Minecraft.
Enhancing Travel Experiences
Upon visiting newzealand.com, users are greeted with a series of tailored prompts addressing common inquiries that often hinder booking decisions. Questions such as “How long are flights to New Zealand?” and “What are the best activities for each season?” serve as gateways for deeper exploration. The AI engages users in conversation, providing personalized responses based on a wealth of data sourced from Tourism New Zealand, regional tourism organizations, and local business operators. This extensive database is further enhanced by over 1,000 integrations from GuideGeek’s award-winning technology.
To celebrate the release of A Minecraft Movie, Tourism New Zealand has collaborated with 11 mana whenua groups, the New Zealand tourism sector, Warner Bros., and Mojang Studios to introduce New Zealand as the first fully playable destination in the Minecraft universe. This unique initiative allows users to explore virtual representations of iconic locations, such as the enchanting Glowworm caves of Waitomo, complete with images from the game.
Brodie McLeish, General Manager of Marketing at Tourism New Zealand, remarked on the success of the GuideGeek test, noting its effectiveness in transforming potential travelers from mere dreamers to active planners. “Our fully playable Minecraft destination is a groundbreaking initiative for us this year,” he stated. “Integrating GuideGeek into this campaign has fueled creativity and driven visitor engagement, showcasing how users are inspired to plan trips based on locations featured in the game.”
Since its launch in late 2024, approximately 200,000 unique users have interacted with the AI on the website, with those engaging with the AI experiencing a remarkable 600% increase in interactions compared to average visitors. Following the Minecraft campaign, the AI has attracted over 50,000 active users from key source markets.
Ross Borden, CEO of Matador Network, praised Tourism New Zealand’s innovative approach, stating, “They have consistently been one of the most successful destination marketing organizations globally, thanks to their exceptional team and the diverse offerings of their destination. Creating a Minecraft version of New Zealand is a next-level achievement, brilliantly utilizing GuideGeek to help visitors explore both virtually and in reality.”
New Zealand stands out as the first destination to incorporate GuideGeek’s AI technology into a partnership with a major brand like Minecraft. The introduction of suggested prompts on the homepage has significantly boosted user engagement and contributed to key business goals.
Stefan Klopp, CTO of Matador Network, highlighted the data-driven nature of Tourism New Zealand, stating, “They rigorously test all their initiatives. With proven success in enhancing AI engagement through calls to action, the next phase involves implementing content-aware prompts across thousands of pages on newzealand.com. For instance, if a user is exploring dining options in Wellington, they will receive tailored suggestions for restaurants and activities that align with their interests.”
