Ubisoft axes six games, including the Prince of Persia Sands of Time remake that felt like it was finally within reach

Ubisoft has embarked on a significant transformation, announcing a comprehensive organizational, operational, and portfolio reset that will reshape its future endeavors. This strategic pivot involves the cancellation of six in-development projects, with the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake being the most notable casualty. Initially unveiled in 2020, this remake has faced a tumultuous development journey, transitioning between multiple studios before settling with Ubisoft Montreal in 2023. Despite hopes for a release within the next few months, it has now been shelved indefinitely.

Strategic Realignment

The driving force behind Ubisoft’s decision is a response to the evolving landscape of the gaming industry. The company acknowledges a shift towards a more selective triple-A market and heightened competition within the shooter genre, compounded by the increasing challenges of brand creation amidst rising costs. In light of these factors, Ubisoft’s new strategy will focus on two primary pillars: open-world games and “Games as a Service” (GaaS) experiences. This approach will be bolstered by targeted investments, deeper specialization, and the integration of advanced technologies, including significant investments in player-facing generative AI.

To facilitate this strategic vision, Ubisoft has established “Creative Houses,” which consist of dedicated teams and studios centered around specific genres and brands. Each Creative House will operate with full financial ownership and responsibility, guided by committed leadership teams. This structure aims to streamline development processes and enhance brand focus across the organization.

While the cancellation of six projects—including four unannounced titles, three of which are new intellectual properties (IPs), and a mobile game—may suggest a retreat from innovation, Ubisoft maintains that it is still committed to original content. Chief Financial Officer Frederick Duguet emphasized that the company has four new IPs in development, including the recently acquired March of Giants, indicating a belief in the potential for success with innovative new offerings.

In addition to the canceled projects, Ubisoft has also announced delays for seven upcoming titles. Among these is an unannounced game initially slated for fiscal year 2026, now pushed to fiscal year 2027. Speculation suggests this could be the much-rumored remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, which has been anticipated for some time. While Ubisoft has not publicly named the delayed titles, other likely candidates include The Division 3, the mobile title The Division Resurgence, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, and the remake of the original Splinter Cell.
