In a significant move for gamers, Ubisoft and Xbox have forged a partnership that allows Xbox players who own select Ubisoft titles on console to obtain free copies for their PC. This initiative, while not encompassing Ubisoft’s entire library, includes a range of popular modern titles such as Assassin’s Creed, The Crew 2, and Watch Dogs Legion.
How to Access the Free PC Games
To take advantage of this offer, users must log into Ubisoft Connect using the same account linked to their Xbox. Once logged in, they can seamlessly add the eligible titles to their PC libraries, provided they own the games on either Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S. It’s important to note that this offer is exclusive to digitally purchased games.
In a recent FAQ, Microsoft clarified that the reverse is not applicable; PC players cannot receive complimentary Xbox versions of Ubisoft games. However, players will have access to nearly all add-on content and expansions they owned on consoles, excluding consumable items and in-game currencies. Titles that support cross-progression will allow players to access all items associated with their accounts.
This initiative appears to be a boon for those who own both a PC and an Xbox console, with no apparent catches that might deter players from seizing the opportunity. The absence of a time limit on the offer enhances its appeal, as even new customers purchasing Ubisoft games on Xbox will qualify for the corresponding PC version.
Current Game Offerings
While the current selection is enticing, there are no indications yet regarding whether Ubisoft and Xbox will expand this partnership to include older or newer titles. Some notable games, such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws, are absent from the offer. However, as part of a broader expansion, a selection of Ubisoft titles, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Star Wars Outlaws, Rainbow Six Siege, Skull and Bones, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, now feature premium editions and add-on content available through Xbox on PC.
Industry Insights
In related news, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently commented on Sony’s decision to cease PlayStation disc production, describing it as “no big deal” for Ubisoft. He drew parallels with the PC market, suggesting that a shift to digital-only formats could stimulate growth within the platform. Guillemot noted, “There’s also some pressure for the future on the cost of machines, and being able to be only digital will help to have more accessible machines. There are pluses and minuses, but we think it will not disturb the industry too much.”
