Instagram faced a significant service disruption that impacted several key functionalities, particularly its messaging system. A surge of user reports indicated that thousands were unable to send or respond to Direct Messages (DMs), leading to interruptions in both personal and group conversations.
According to data from Downdetector, over 10,000 users reported issues, with the bulk of complaints originating from the United States, although reports also surfaced from various other regions.
Direct Messages (DMs) among the most affected features
The majority of user grievances centered around the challenges of sending and replying to messages within Instagram’s chat system. Many users encountered issues where messages failed to send, replies remained stagnant, or conversations did not refresh in real time. In some instances, users could access previous messages but were unable to initiate new ones.
This disruption effectively halted ongoing dialogues on a platform that heavily relies on its messaging capabilities for daily interactions. Instagram DMs facilitate the exchange of text messages, photos, videos, posts, and voice notes, making the impact of this outage particularly pronounced.
App performance issues also widely reported
Data from outage monitoring services revealed that complaints regarding the Instagram app itself were also prevalent. Users reported sluggish app performance, difficulties in loading content, and error messages when attempting to utilize messaging features. Additionally, Downdetector noted that some users experienced server connection issues, hinting that the problems may have stemmed from backend service disruptions.
Posting and publishing content temporarily affected
In addition to messaging woes, several users reported challenges with posting and publishing content on the platform. Many expressed frustration over their inability to upload new posts or complete the publishing process after selecting photos or videos.
Users turn to other platforms to confirm outage
As the service issues escalated, a number of users sought confirmation of the outage on other social media platforms. Numerous posts emerged detailing difficulties in replying to friends or sending messages through chats.
As of the latest updates, Instagram’s parent company, Meta, had not provided an official statement regarding the cause of the disruption.
