Meta faces major outage as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp goes down for thousands of users globally

Meta’s suite of social media platforms—Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger—has been grappling with a significant outage, leaving a multitude of users across various countries unable to access essential features. Reports of disruptions have surged, particularly in India and the United States, as users encounter a range of issues from app failures to login complications and website access problems.

According to Downdetector, a platform dedicated to tracking outages, the brunt of the complaints has been directed towards Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, with WhatsApp experiencing a comparatively smaller increase in reports. Users have reported challenges logging into their accounts, accessing feeds, sending messages, and utilizing mobile applications, with the outage impacting both web and app users alike.

Facebook and Instagram see the highest number of user complaints

In the United States, Facebook recorded an alarming peak of 109,365 outage reports, which later subsided to 5,958. Among the affected users, 56% cited app-related issues, while 27% faced login problems and 10% reported difficulties accessing the website. In India, the situation mirrored this trend, with Facebook outage reports peaking at 1,093 before declining to 410. Here, 49% of users encountered app issues, 30% experienced login troubles, and 12% reported server connection problems.

Instagram also witnessed a notable rise in complaints. In India, reports peaked at 8,582 before dropping to 4,716, with 51% of affected users reporting app issues, 36% facing login problems, and 7% citing server connection issues. In the US, Instagram reports peaked at 8,868 and later fell to 5,398, with approximately 57% of users experiencing app-related issues, 22% reporting login challenges, and 11% noting server connection problems.

Messenger users were not spared from the disruptions either. In the US, reports surged to a peak of 15,403 before declining to 2,960. Here, login problems constituted 54% of the reports, while 31% were related to app issues and 14% involved messaging difficulties. Meanwhile, in India, Messenger had 91 reports at the time of writing.

WhatsApp appeared to be less affected compared to its Meta counterparts. In India, reports peaked at 216 before falling to 103, with around 37% of users reporting app issues, 32% experiencing login problems, and 27% citing website-related issues. In the US, WhatsApp reports peaked at 153 and stood at 148 at the time of writing, with website-related issues making up 42% of the reports, followed by app problems at 26% and login issues at 20%.

As of now, Meta has not issued a public statement regarding the cause of the disruption. The absence of a public status page for its consumer services complicates efforts to independently verify the extent of the outage. However, at the time of publication, reports on Downdetector were gradually declining, hinting at a potential recovery of some services, even as users continued to experience issues across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
