For those who prioritize privacy and are wary of the pervasive surveillance by governments and major tech companies, the messaging app Session has likely crossed their radar. This free, open-source platform offers end-to-end encryption without requiring users to provide a phone number or email for registration. By routing messages through an onion network instead of a centralized server, Session has garnered a dedicated following among users who value anonymity and security. However, the project now finds itself in a precarious situation, issuing a call for support as it faces potential closure.
A call for help
Your donations have helped, and the Session Technology Foundation (STF) has received enough funding to support critical operations for 90 days. This means that Session will remain available on the app stores and essential services (such as the file server and push notification…— Session (@session_app) April 9, 2026
The Session Technology Foundation (STF) has recently sent out a distress signal, revealing that the app’s future is now in jeopardy. The announcement coincided with the last working day for all paid staff and developers at the STF. Moving forward, Session will rely solely on volunteers to keep its operations afloat. While earlier donations have ensured that critical infrastructure remains online until July 8, they fall short of funding a development team, leading to a halt in development activities.
This pause means that new features cannot be introduced, existing bugs are likely to remain unresolved, and the STF has indicated that new releases are improbable during this period. Chris McCabe, co-founder of Session, had previously raised concerns about the project’s sustainability. In a heartfelt appeal shared in March, he acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by the organization and emphasized the fragility of its future. He urged users to consider contributing financially, stating:
The project is on a path to self-sustainability, but the future is fragile. If every Session user contributed just one dollar, it would go a long way towards Session reaching sustainability. If you’ve ever considered donating, now is the time to act.
Despite these appeals, the necessary support has not materialized, prompting the foundation to escalate its call for assistance. The STF has articulated a need for million to complete ongoing projects, including Protocol v2, which aims to enhance security features such as forward secrecy (PFS), post-quantum cryptography, and improved device management. Additionally, the introduction of Session Pro, a subscription tier, is intended to establish a self-sustaining model for the project. Should this funding goal be met, the STF is optimistic that Session could operate independently without further community fundraising.
As of now, ,000 of the required million has been raised. Those who wish to support the survival of this privacy-centric messaging app, especially in an era where surveillance is intensifying, can make contributions at getsession.org/donate.
