Spotify Launches In-App Direct Messaging for Music Sharing

Spotify Introduces Direct Messaging Feature for Enhanced User Interaction

In a move to foster deeper connections among its users, Spotify is unveiling a direct messaging feature that enables individuals to share music, podcast, and audiobook recommendations seamlessly within the app. This new functionality is set to launch this week in select markets, catering to both Free and Premium users aged 16 and older.

The messaging feature integrates smoothly into Spotify’s existing sharing capabilities. Users can simply tap the share icon while enjoying content in the Now Playing view and select a friend to send their recommendations. Recipients have the option to accept or decline these message requests, and they can engage in conversations through text and emoji reactions.

Conversations via Messages are designed to be exclusive, limited to one-on-one exchanges between users who have previously interacted through Spotify’s features such as Jams, Blends, or Collaborative Playlists. Additionally, users who share a Family or Duo plan can also connect through this new messaging system. All shared content is conveniently stored in a Messages inbox, which can be accessed through the user’s profile picture.

Spotify assures users that their conversations are safeguarded by industry-standard encryption and are subject to the platform’s established content moderation policies. While this feature enhances in-app communication, Spotify emphasizes that it is not intended to replace sharing content through social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. Instead, the company envisions Messages as a complementary tool that enriches the overall user experience.

This introduction marks the second innovative feature Spotify has rolled out in recent weeks, following the launch of a mixing capability that allows Premium subscribers to create seamless transitions between tracks in their playlists.
