At Google I/O 2026, the tech giant unveiled a series of significant updates for Android Auto, particularly focusing on enhancements to media applications. This latest iteration promises a fresh redesign, the introduction of widgets, and support for video applications, among other features.
The Car App Library is set to receive a major upgrade with the release of version 1.9.0-alpha01, which aims to transform the way media apps are designed for car displays. Historically, these interfaces have adhered to a standardized format, primarily for safety reasons. However, Google is now opening the door to a more dynamic and customizable experience.
Developers will gain access to an array of new components that will enrich the user experience. These include:
- Expanded headers for enhanced visual emphasis
- Spotlight sections to highlight specific content within scrollable areas
- New types of progress bars
- Chip shortcuts for quick access
- An adaptive mini-player that allows users to browse while managing playback
Google elaborated on these enhancements, stating,
“We’re increasing the modularity of existing templates to give developers more flexibility and options for laying out content. These improvements include expanded headers for better visual emphasis, such as on detail pages, spotlight sections that can be placed in scrollable areas to highlight specific content, and grid item variations to support different content types and states.”
Developers interested in these new features can apply for a beta program to gain early access. The initial rollout of these changes will be seen in popular applications such as:
- Spotify
- YouTube Music
- Amazon Music
- Gaana
- PocketFM
- TuneIn
Last week, custom user interfaces for Spotify and YouTube were showcased, highlighting the innovative designs that will soon be available to users.
