Android’s March update is all about finding people, apps, and your missing bags

Google has unveiled its latest Pixel Drop for March, introducing a suite of enhancements designed to elevate the user experience across various functionalities. This update is particularly noteworthy as it rolls out first to Pixel devices before making its way to other Android phones.

What you need to know

  • Live location sharing is now integrated into Google Messages, allowing users to share their real-time location seamlessly within a chat.
  • Google Play has introduced short app preview videos, enabling users to scroll through concise demos to quickly assess app functionality before downloading.
  • Find Hub has been enhanced to assist in recovering lost luggage by generating a secure tracking link for tagged bags, which can be shared directly with participating airlines.

The latest Pixel Drop from Google brings a host of meaningful upgrades that touch on messaging, app discovery, calling, in-car entertainment, and even luggage recovery. One of the standout features is the ability to share your live location directly within Google Messages, eliminating the need to toggle between apps.

Here’s what’s new

With the Find Hub app, users can now enjoy a travel-oriented upgrade that aims to alleviate the stress associated with lost luggage. By utilizing a compatible tracker tag, you can create a secure link within the Find Hub app and share it with airlines that support this feature. The process is straightforward: open the app, tap “share item location,” copy the unique link, and paste it into the airline’s app or website. This allows the airline to access your bag’s live location, which updates in real time.

The links generated for tracking your luggage automatically expire after seven days, and you have the option to stop sharing at any time. Additionally, sharing ceases once your phone detects that the item has returned to you, ensuring your location data remains encrypted throughout the process.

Currently, over ten major global airlines support this innovative feature, including Ajet, Air India, China Airlines, Saudia Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and the Lufthansa Group, with Qantas expected to join the ranks shortly. Google has collaborated with SITA and Reunitus to integrate this feature with WorldTracer and NetTracer, baggage systems utilized by hundreds of airlines across thousands of airports worldwide, ensuring a seamless fit into existing airline operations.

Android Central’s Take

This update stands out not for a radical overhaul of the user interface but for its focus on addressing the everyday inconveniences that users encounter. There are no dramatic changes or new AI assistants commandeering the home screen; instead, Google has prioritized making small yet impactful improvements.

Consider the common scenario of sending a “where are you?” text, followed by a frustrating search for the recipient over the phone. With this update, users can simply drop a pin in Messages, streamlining the process significantly. The luggage tracking feature is equally beneficial, allowing users to share their bag’s coordinates directly with airlines, a capability that was previously confined to airline systems. This is the kind of enhancement that may go unnoticed until it becomes essential, at which point its value is truly appreciated.
