Chrome will borrow Gemini’s cross-app powers in upcoming agentic upgrade

Google Chrome, a stalwart in the web browsing landscape for nearly two decades, is poised for a significant upgrade that aims to enhance user experience through new agentic capabilities. As competition from emerging browsers like Comet, Dia, and Opera Neon intensifies, Google is responding by integrating advanced features that promise to redefine how users interact with the browser.

Enhancing User Experience with Gemini

The upcoming enhancements will introduce Gemini, a feature designed to enrich Chrome with “Personal Intelligence.” This innovation will allow users to seamlessly access information from various Google apps and services directly within the browser. Rather than merely retrieving data, Gemini will enable Chrome to perform tasks such as clicking links, scrolling pages, and typing—all autonomously.

Recently, Google has rolled out Personal Intelligence to Gemini across its mobile applications and web interface. This functionality allows Gemini to synthesize context from multiple Google apps, including Gmail and Photos, along with user chats and recent history, resulting in more tailored responses. The integration of Personal Intelligence into Chrome is set to enhance this capability further, making Gemini a more integral part of the browsing experience.

Similar to its operation within the chatbot, Personal Intelligence will maintain a record of previous interactions with Gemini in Chrome, refining its responses over time. This approach, termed “context packing,” enables Gemini to deliver the most pertinent information efficiently, akin to a quick overview rather than an exhaustive search through various resources.

Streamlining Tasks Across Applications

The benefits of Chrome’s personal intelligence extend beyond information retrieval. With the expansion of agentic browsing features, Gemini will assist users in executing tasks that involve other services. For instance, users will be able to draft emails in Gmail using information gathered from a web page or an open tab, all without the need to switch to Gmail in a separate window. This streamlined process will allow users to review drafts before sending, enhancing productivity and convenience.

In response to privacy concerns regarding data usage, Google has assured users that Personal Intelligence in Chrome will be an opt-in feature. Users will have the flexibility to connect or disconnect apps as they see fit, ensuring control over their data.

While these innovative features are not yet available, Google has indicated that they will be rolled out in the coming months. The enhancements will initially be accessible on desktop versions of Chrome, with previews likely available to Google AI Pro and Ultra users in the United States. As Google continues to elevate Gemini’s capabilities, the prospect of a more intuitive and efficient browsing experience is on the horizon.
