In a move that blends nostalgia with modern sensibilities, Commodore has officially introduced the Callback 8020, a retro-inspired flip phone that aims to redefine our relationship with technology. This Linux-based clamshell device is designed with a clear purpose: to promote a digital detox by eliminating distractions commonly found in today’s smartphones. With no social media, no browser, and no work or email apps, the Callback 8020 embodies the philosophy that technology should serve us, not control us.
Insights from Leadership
Peri Fractic, President & CEO of Commodore, shared his personal journey in a letter to fans, revealing that the Callback 8020 is a product of his own quest to overcome phone addiction. This insight adds a layer of authenticity to the device, as it emerges from a genuine desire to foster a more intentional use of technology.
The Callback 8020 operates on a customized version of the Jolla Sailfish OS, allowing for a balance between functionality and simplicity. While it retains compatibility with a range of Android apps, it also features stringent controls to prevent the installation of browsers and social media applications. According to the device’s FAQ, users can sideload apps using APK installer files, but the primary focus remains on creating a calmer, more deliberate phone experience.
Technical Specifications and Features
Equipped with high-quality audio capabilities, the Callback 8020 includes ESS and Cirrus Logic audio chips, ensuring an immersive sound experience. Users can enjoy Commodore’s iconic SID ringtones and a built-in FM radio, along with the inclusion of HQ IEM (wired) earphones in the package.
The device features a minimal closed clamshell display that shows the time and battery status, complemented by a color LED system for notifications. Upon opening, users are greeted by a 3.25-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels, a selfie camera, and a classic T9 keypad, complete with a distinctive Commodore button. The back of the phone houses a 48MP Sony camera with flash, and the removable back cover allows for easy battery swaps, microSD card access, and Dual-SIM functionality.
Commodore is also introducing a range of accessories, including Snapback packs, Hardback cases, and a Backpack holster, enhancing the customization options for users.
A Touch of Nostalgia
In a delightful nod to its heritage, the Callback 8020 ships with a selection of classic and modern Commodore 64 games, including the ever-popular Snake, a staple from Nokia’s legacy. This blend of old and new is sure to resonate with fans of the brand.
The Callback 8020 will be available in five distinct colorways: ProtoPET White, SX Silver, BASIC Beige, Starlight Edition, and a Founders Edition in gold. Priced at 9, early adopters can take advantage of a discount by joining the waitlist, with pre-orders set to commence at the end of this month.
