In a notable development for the smart home sector, Google is set to enhance its Google Home platform with the integration of Gemini. This initiative is accompanied by an update to the Google Home app, which is expected to introduce a range of new features aimed at improving user experience.
According to insights from Android Authority, the forthcoming version 3.41.50.3 of the app reveals a significant redesign. While the overall user interface may not appear drastically different, subtle usability enhancements have been made to streamline navigation and place Gemini prominently within the app’s functionality.
New Features and Functionality
Among the most exciting updates is the introduction of the “Ask Home” feature. Users will now be able to control their smart devices by either typing or verbally expressing their commands. This feature also allows for searching through video and home history, providing detailed descriptions of past activities. The new “Ask Home” search bar, located at the top of the app, opens a dedicated conversation screen, enhancing interactivity.
Previously announced, Gemini for Home is designed to enable users to control their smart home devices using natural language through Google’s smart speakers and displays. This seamless integration into the Home app is a logical extension of that functionality.
Additional updates noted by Android Authority include a rebranding of the Favorites tab to simply “Home,” while the Devices and Settings tab has been streamlined to feature only three icons. Device access will now be facilitated via a grid icon within the Home tab. Furthermore, users can look forward to adding outdoor air quality and temperature as favorite tiles, alongside new icons for video and a thermometer, hinting at potential upcoming Nest hardware releases.
This comprehensive refresh of the app is anticipated to roll out many features that have been in trial within Google’s Public Preview program, making them accessible to a broader user base.
