In 2025, many users have embraced Gemini, Google’s innovative tool that enhances mobile device functionality. As Google adjusts its timeline for transitioning all users from Assistant, those who have already adopted Gemini appreciate its seamless integration on smartphones, whether through the dedicated app or AI Mode in Search. However, the Gemini overlay has emerged as the most convenient method for quick access.
Enhancements to the Gemini Overlay
Currently, activating the Gemini overlay through voice commands or a long-press of the power button locks users into that session. Once the overlay is summoned, tapping outside of it causes it to disappear, requiring users to start anew with each interaction. This limitation can be frustrating for those who wish to switch between apps without losing their place in Gemini.
While the option to use the standalone Gemini app exists, Google appears to be working on an improved multitasking experience. In the latest beta version of the Google Android app, version 16.51.52.sa.arm64, early testers have discovered a revised interface that allows users to navigate away from the Gemini overlay without losing their ongoing session.
This new functionality enables users to initiate a query through the overlay and then return to their previous app while Gemini processes the request. Users will receive a notification when the results are ready, allowing them to simply tap a floating button to return to the overlay. This feature effectively minimizes the overlay, keeping the session active and accessible for later use. When finished, users can easily swipe to dismiss the overlay.
The anticipated changes to the Gemini overlay promise to enhance user experience significantly, fostering a more fluid interaction between apps and Gemini. As this feature is still in development, there is optimism that it will soon be available to the broader Gemini user base.
⚠️ It’s important to note that an APK teardown can provide insights into potential future features based on preliminary code. However, there is no guarantee that these features will be included in the final public release.
