In a significant update to Android Automotive, Google is unveiling a redesigned Play Store that promises to enhance the user experience for drivers. This new iteration will cater to various infotainment screen sizes and orientations, making it easier for users to discover apps tailored for their vehicles equipped with Google built-in.
Among the notable changes, the Play Store will feature improved categorization and a refreshed storefront, streamlining the app discovery process. Currently, Android Automotive boasts over 700 apps, with new additions such as STARZ, Firefox, Ludo King, and JioHotstar enriching the ecosystem.
YouTube will keep playing audio when you start driving
A particularly intriguing enhancement is the new YouTube playback feature. This allows users to watch videos while parked, with the audio continuing to play seamlessly even after the vehicle is in motion. However, this functionality requires a YouTube Premium subscription, which may appeal to those who frequently enjoy podcasts, interviews, and other content where audio takes precedence over visuals.
Previously, Google had hinted at the potential for this park-to-driving functionality in vehicles, but the latest announcement confirms its implementation specifically for Android Automotive systems. This feature ensures that audio playback remains uninterrupted as drivers transition from a stationary position to driving, eliminating the need for any interaction with the screen.
It is important to note that Android Automotive and Android Auto are distinct platforms. Android Automotive operates directly on the car’s infotainment system, while Android Auto mirrors apps from a connected smartphone. Although Android Auto currently supports YouTube audio controls, Google has yet to clarify whether the new automatic switch from video to audio will be available on that platform.
