Google follows through with killing off Play Store app sharing; here’s what to use instead

In a recent update, Google has officially removed the app-sharing feature from the Play Store, a change that many users may not have anticipated. This decision follows an announcement made last December, where Google indicated that this functionality would soon be discontinued. The latest version of the Play Store, 45.2.19-31, has now implemented this change, eliminating the ability to share apps directly with other users.

Transitioning to New Sharing Options

For Android users, the ability to share apps could have been particularly beneficial in regions with limited or costly data access. The convenience of quickly transferring an app to a friend was a feature that, while perhaps underutilized, held its own charm. However, as we approach the end of 2024, Google has made it clear that this feature has reached its conclusion.

Despite the removal of this option, Google has ensured that users are not left without alternatives. Files by Google remains a viable solution, offering a suite of sharing tools that includes the capability to share apps, similar to what the Play Store once provided. While users will need to adapt to a new workflow, this consolidation of features into a single platform may ultimately enhance the overall user experience, streamlining the process of sharing across devices.

As the landscape of mobile applications continues to evolve, such changes remind us of the dynamic nature of technology and the importance of adapting to new tools and methods for connectivity.
