The tech giant has begun the process of removing direct access to Assistant settings from the Google app on Android devices. According to a report from 9to5Google, this move is intended to phase out conventional Assistant features, thereby promoting the use of Gemini, which is being touted as the next-generation AI assistant. Previously, Android users enjoyed the convenience of managing their Google Assistant preferences directly within the Google app. However, with the latest update, users will now be redirected to either the Google Home app or the system settings to make necessary adjustments. Key features that were once accessible through the Google app, such as routines, voice settings, and default applications, will now require this new navigation approach.
The changes were noted in Google App version 16.12, where the Google Assistant option has been removed from the profile menu settings. A comprehensive list of features previously available through Google Assistant included options for sensitivity, accessibility, accounts, voice and sound preferences, calendar management, communication tools, and much more. This strategic pivot reflects Google’s commitment to enhancing its Gemini platform, which is designed to offer a more conversational and capable user experience. The rollout of Gemini is currently taking place in phases across Android devices, beginning with Pixel smartphones.
