In a proactive move to enhance user experience, Google has commenced the rollout of a new warning system within the Play Store, aimed at alerting users to apps that may significantly drain their device’s battery. This initiative, which began on March 1, introduces a clear notification on Android app listings stating, “this app may use more battery than expected due to high background activity.”
Alongside this user-facing warning, Google is implementing a new metric designed to assist developers in understanding the frequency with which their applications activate a device’s background processes. This step reflects Google’s commitment to addressing a prevalent concern among Android users regarding excessive battery consumption.
In recognition that excessive battery drain is top of mind for Android users, Google has been taking significant steps to help developers build more power-efficient apps. On March 1st, 2026, Google Play Store began rolling out the wake lock technical quality treatments to improve battery drain. This treatment will roll out gradually to impacted apps over the following weeks. Apps that consistently exceed the “Excessive Partial Wake Lock” threshold in Android vitals may see tangible impacts on their store presence, including warnings on their store listing and exclusion from discovery surfaces such as recommendations.
Importantly, apps that meet the criteria for this warning but provide “clear user benefits” will be exempt from these penalties. Such benefits may encompass functionalities like music playback, location services, and user-initiated data transfers, among others. Google has made available comprehensive documentation outlining these exemptions, ensuring developers are well-informed as they navigate these new guidelines.
