How to use Pixel Journal on the Pixel 10

The art of journaling may not hold the same allure it once did, yet Google is determined to breathe new life into this cherished practice with the introduction of its Pixel Journal app. Currently available exclusively for the Pixel 10, this innovative application allows users to capture their thoughts and experiences through both text and images, while also providing AI-driven insights designed to inspire and motivate.

How to set up and use Pixel Journal on the Pixel 10

For those who have recently acquired a Pixel 10, setting up the Journal app is a straightforward process:

  1. Begin by searching for Journal in your app drawer.
  2. Upon launching the app for the first time, you will be prompted to select a purpose for your journaling, with seven distinct goals to choose from.
  3. You can then link the app to other Google services, such as Photos and Health Connect. Additionally, you have the option to enable cloud backup and establish a separate PIN for enhanced security.
  4. Once configured, the first tab labeled Entries will display all your journal entries, which can be easily searched using the magnifying glass icon located in the upper left corner.
  5. The second tab, Insights, organizes your entries chronologically and includes emotional emojis to reflect your feelings at the time of writing.
  6. To create a new Journal entry, you can either utilize one of the AI-generated prompts or select recent pictures, which will automatically attach relevant images to your entry.
  7. Customization options allow you to alter the appearance of your entries by selecting different fonts and color schemes. If you opted to connect to Health Connect, you can also log your fitness data here.
  8. Upon completing an entry, it will be automatically tagged, and an AI-assisted reflection will be generated. You can modify these reflections by scrolling to the bottom of the entry and tapping the emoji.

Privacy is paramount when using the Pixel Journal app

As the Pixel Journal app becomes a repository for the private thoughts and emotions of its users, Google emphasizes the importance of privacy. According to the company’s support page, all entries, including those backed up, are secure, and the data is not utilized for advertising purposes. Furthermore, none of the journal entries contribute to the training of Google’s GenAI models.

The app employs an on-device Google service for audio transcription, ensuring that no data is transmitted to the cloud. Currently, the AI features are available only in English and Japanese, and users must be at least 18 years old to access them. Among these features is “Deep dive,” which offers fresh perspectives on your current topics, while Mood ID selects the most fitting emoji for your entry, conveniently located in the Insights tab. To generate an AI reflection, users need to include a minimum of five words in their entries.

The Pixel 10, powered by the advanced Tensor G5 chip and equipped with innovative Gemini AI features like Camera Coach and Magic Cue, stands as a testament to Google’s commitment to blending technology with personal expression.
